When I started writing, I was told that writing what you know is a crucial part of writing as a writer. Actually, I think that “it is crucial to write what you know and enjoy,” which was the case when I wrote my first novel The Unlikely Detective.

It was only after writing my second novel, The Unlikely Detective and The Black Dragon Society, that I knew I would continue to write. It is my hope that my novel writing will also continue to thrill and excite you.

I also learned that there is no one way to write a novel. And, most authors, though, agree on two things: one, you should read widely and deeply in your field or genre; and two, you should rewrite ruthlessly.
And so, that is why I decided to write about Tokyo and Japan in novel form. I found that my time in Tokyo had allowed me to experience many of the places in and around the city, as well as in the country itself. The same is true for my character Matt Kelly, he also enjoys many things about Tokyo and Japan.
On the pages listed below, you will find interesting facts about Matt Kelly, this series, me, how I created the series, and how I write.
On the Novel Locales page, I provide a map linked to a “Google Maps” (c) map showing many of the locations Matt Kelly visits in the novels.
Discover where Matt Kelly has been in the novels on the Gallery page. On this page, I have provided photos and a short description of each as depicted in my novels. Every location Matt Kelly has been to is real except for a few of the bars and restaurants. These locations are fictitious and described further in the “Author’s Note ” of my novels.
